Understanding Pain After Surgery

Pain after surgery can be difficult to describe and manage. This page helps you prepare questions, organize written instructions, and understand when to contact your surgical team. It does not replace medical advice or your prescribed pain plan.

Some discomfort may be expected after a procedure, but uncontrolled, suddenly worsening, or unusual pain deserves attention. Use your discharge instructions and prescribed plan exactly as directed. Do not change medication doses or combine treatments without speaking with the appropriate clinician.

Plan before you go home

Before discharge, ask what level of discomfort is expected, when to take prescribed medication, which non-medication measures are permitted, and which warning signs require a call. Keep the surgical team’s phone number and written instructions easy to reach.

Planned in-home nursing support can help you stay organized, follow the written recovery plan, and prepare clear questions for your care team. It does not prescribe medication, change your treatment plan, or replace your surgeon. Call 911 for a medical emergency.
